<title>Intense Collaboration In Globally Distributed Teams</title>
  <link>http://www.defence-industry.net/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=45</link>
<description>As multi-national firms and major offshore outsourcing companies develop experience with global work, their globally distributed teams face the challenge of collaborating intensely without the common interaction advantages associated with collocated work. This chapter analyzes the sources of intense collaboration. It then introduces strategies that organizations have developed to reduce the intensity of collaboration (sequentializing work, using mediating artifacts, modularity), or to enable intense teamwork (real time contact, boundary spanners). Strategy properties and deployment opportunities and constraints are indicated in order to equip managers and researchers with a framework for handling or analyzing globally distributed teamwork.

<title>&quot;Rich Requirement Specifications: the use of Planguage to clarify requirements&quot;</title>
  <link>http://www.defence-industry.net/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=38</link>
  <description>&quot;Rich Requirement Specifications: the use of Planguage to clarify requirements&quot;
by Tom Gilb. 17 November 2003

Abstract:

I believe that most requirements specifications in practice are very poor in clarity, and in content. I believe that in addition to tackling the clarity problem by a variety of rich specification devices, we need to make a requirement specification ‘work harder’ to satisfy a large number of needs by adding ‘background’ to the requirement.

The needs I am referring to include: prioritisation, risk management, change management, presentation, justification, testability, integration, quality control, and other purposes.

To do this I have, over the years developed a requirement specification language, as a subset of my Planning Language (Planguage). This is has been developed by practical need in international industry over decades, and supplemented with some recent ideas. The more detailed version of the Requirements Language is documented in my book manuscript Competitive Engineering, which is a handbook defining concepts rigorously (www.gilb.com).

This paper will give an overview of the conceptual basis and some detail as a sample. By ‘rich’ I mean substantially more detail for each requirement than is usual. By ‘background’ I mean information related to the requirement that is not the requirement itself.

<title>Lockheed Martin selects IFS Applications for F-35 JSF ALIS Supply Chain Manageme</title>
  <link>http://www.defence-industry.net/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=37</link>
  <description>London, United Kingdom, 5 January, 2005

Lockheed Martin selects IFS Applications for F-35 JSF ALIS Supply Chain Management
IFS Applications has been selected by Lockheed Martin for local Supply Chain Management on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme Autonomic Logistic Information System (ALIS).

Within the F-35 aircraft system design, ALIS is the information backbone that provides core functionality for in-service operations. As part of its ongoing objective to provide a ‘lowest cost’ Supply Chain Management (SCM) service, the Lockheed Martin LM project team has decided to extend the IFS footprint in ALIS to cover both Enterprise Resource Management (ERM) and SCM with one package - IFS Applications.

IFS Applications is now deeply involved in ALIS having also previously been selected for the management of support equipment in a separate selection exercise. “This recent additional selection on the JSF program, reinforces IFS Defences’s position as a strategic supplier to Lockheed Martin, who have also chosen IFS Applications for the UK MOD JAMES project” commented Simon Dowler, CEO of IFS Defence Ltd.

About IFS Defence Ltd
IFS Defence Ltd provides armed forces, government bodies and Defence contractors worldwide, a powerful combination of domain experience and component-based business applications. These applications provide global defence solutions combining best practice, domain expertise, market-proven Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) software, and structured implementation services. For all whole-life equipment support requirements there is now one global organisation which can help influence the design of equipment for supportability, plan for the support of that equipment through life and deliver component-based business applications which support evolution towards the ‘extended enterprise’ and component-based Product Life-Cycle Support (PLCS).

  <title>Viable co-operation in civil-military relationships</title>
  <link>http://www.defence-industry.net/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=36</link>
<description>During the last decade of the 20th century, civil-military co-operation has become a characteristic of humanitarian operations. In spite of positive results, there are many instances to show that good working relationships between civilian and military actors do not come about naturally (Bollen: 2002). The complexity of civil-military relationships may account for the strenuous collaboration between civilian and military actors.
